Services & Fees

Our goal is to keep our fees for appointments and supplements as low as possible. All fees include taxes (HST) and are payable at the time of service. We accept payment by cash, Debit, Visa, and Mastercard. We do not accept cheques.

Most private extended medical plans provide reimbursement for a portion of naturopathic visits and lab work. Patients are responsible for checking with their plan to find out what type of coverage they have and for submitting their receipts for reimbursement.

Appointments with Dr. Matsen

Please note that all fees include HST.
Appointments are 15 minutes long.

Visit Type Fee
Initial Visit (includes info package) $84
Return Visit $49

During the initial appointment, Dr. Matsen will take a brief history of a patient’s problem(s). Using applied kinesiology—also known as muscle testing (see below for explanation)—he will determine which of the patient’s organs are weak and will then prescribe nutritional supplements to support these organs during the detoxification process. Dr. Matsen recommends that patients have the Diet Explanation and Lab Work done (see below)—these are an important part of the Eating Alive Program.

Follow-up appointments are necessary to check on a patient’s progress and update his/her supplements. (See the “Treatment” page for a general timeline for appointments with Dr. Matsen and what to expect during each part of the treatment program.)

The info package that patients receive on their first visit contains important information for following the treatment program. It includes a booklet titled The Eating Alive Program which gives detailed information about the eating plan as well as other dietary and lifestyle factors. It contains Menu Suggestions, an updated Food Chart, information about proteins, fats, carbohydrates, whole grains, yeast-free breads, and healthy alternatives to sugar as well other information sheets and pamphlets to help you follow the Eating Alive Program. This package is only available to patients of the Northshore Naturopathic Clinic.

Diet Explanation and Lab Work

Total Fee for Diet Explanation and Lab work (Food Sensitivity Testing,          2 Blood Pictures, and 1 Urine Test) $350
Diet Explanation
The Diet Explanation is done by one of the Clinic’s assistants who will explain the basics of the Eating Alive dietary program and answer questions that the patient may have. The assistant will provide recommendations on the changes the patient may need to make in his/her eating habits. In addition to the info package that’s included with initial visits, the patient will also receive a copy of Dr. Matsen’s book, Eating Alive II.
Food Sensitivity Testing
The food test that we use is the Comprehensive 96 IgG Food Panel. It involves taking a sample of blood from the patient and sending it to a lab to be analyzed. The results of this test are typically returned to us from the lab in approximately 2½ weeks, at which time the patient will be instructed as to which foods should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks. Instructions for re-introduction of suspect foods will also be given.

The IgG Food Panel tests for 96 different foods and measures the serum concentration of antibodies that react to specific food allergens. IgG antibodies are the potential indicator of delayed food allergies or food sensitivities. The delayed IgG antibody response often appears 1 to 3 days after exposure to the trigger food. Tiny amounts do not set off symptoms, only excess amounts—overloads. Symptoms are generalized and the delayed onset makes the cause and effect diagnosis difficult. These symptoms range from headache, muscle ache, tension and fatigue, to exacerbation of allergic rhinitis and asthma. The benefit of this test is that it can identify unsuspected food
sensitivities, which if ignored, may result in stress on the immune system, contributing to the development of additional illness.

(We also have a more comprehensive Food Test that tests for 184 different foods. Refer to the Lab Testing page for the lists of foods that are tested. Please ask the receptionist about additional fees for this test.)

Blood Pictures
The H-L-B Blood Picture was devised to observe free radical activity in the blood. Free radicals are highly destructive substances which, in large quantities, contribute to many diseases. We put a few drops of blood from a patient’s earlobe onto a microscope slide, and then we put the slide under a microscope at a magnification of 200 and take a picture of the blood. A second blood picture is taken later on in the treatment program. The blood pictures are used to monitor the success of treatment and as a visual aid for the patient.
Urine Test
We do a standard urine test to check for the presence of substances such as protein, ketones, blood, sugar, etc. in the urine.

Muscle Testing (Applied Kinesiology)
Muscle testing (also known as applied kinesiology) is a feedback system that Dr. Matsen uses to test the body for imbalances, whether these imbalances are caused by external stimuli, or internally by yeast, parasites, or poorly functioning organs. Electrocardiograms (ECG), electroencephalograms (EEG), biofeedback, and lie detector tests are other examples of such feedback systems. The human body (as well as animals and plants) has an electrical or energy system that animates it. This is the chi that is described in Traditional Chinese Medicine that energizes the body’s organs, glands, and systems. You can think of this energy as being similar to the battery that runs a car. Your body’s energetic field is measurable and is directly related to your health.

Muscle testing involves isolating a muscle—Dr. Matsen uses the shoulder muscle—and checking its ability to remain strong when substances such as foods, supplements, drugs, etc. are brought into your energy field. Each substance that is being tested has its own energy which can flow through the container in which it is stored. If a substance is in harmony with your energy system (that is, if it does not disrupt or weaken your energy), the muscle will remain strong or “locked.” If the substance is not in harmony, your muscle will feel weak. Dr. Matsen is trained to detect even slight fluctuations in the strength of your muscle and uses this method to test if your organs are weak, which supplements are suitable for you, and if you have intestinal yeast.

In conjunction with the muscle testing, Dr. Matsen uses a Vega machine. This allows him to test many different supplements fairly quickly so that your arm doesn’t tire too easily. The Vega machine outputs a low level electrical current—the same frequency as your body’s energy (10 Hz)—which runs through an electrode that you hold in your hand. This allows the energy of the supplement that’s being tested to be brought into your energy field. Dr. Matsen can then determine whether the substance is beneficial for you by muscle testing. This type of testing does not give quantitative results; it cannot determine the degree of pathology or organ damage, and it cannot detect the amount of toxic metals or yeast that may be present in your body. However, it’s very useful for detecting organ weaknesses that are often not able to be detected by standard medical tests.
